PGR2 Locations
Project Gotham Racing 2 features 12 different racing areas, split between 10 real-world city courses, the famous Nurburgring circuit, and a fictional test track. A further two cities were added via downloadable content. Each route was recreated in digital form from thousands of reference photos, maps, and research videos. Bizarre staff actually visited the featured locations for (often manic) research trips, before heading back to North-West England to work on their virtual counterparts for the game.
Yokohama, Japan
(10 routes)
When Microsoft Japan recommended Yokohama for inclusion in PGR2 we knew there had to be something special about the city. Their advice turned out to be spot-on, and Yokohama was added. The city is located just south of Tokyo, and is much quieter with a very different atmosphere. The focal point is the Landmark Tower, which dominates the skyline and is visible from virtually every circuit. Yokohama also features a giant Ferris Wheel and rollercoaster ride in the Southern part of the course. Circuits include:
- Yokohama Bay Tour
- Yokohama Challenge
- Kishamichi
- Downtown
- Warhouse Loop
- Seaside Loop
- Honcho Dori
- Sakuragicho
- Minato Mirai
- Shinko Park
Stockholm, Sweden
(10 routes)
Stockholm is a unique city which we were really excited about including in PGR2. The large expanses of water, and small, unpredictable road layout provide a challenge which few other cities worldwide could offer. Away from the waterfront, the roads become wider and faster, although have several hazards are still present. An example of this is a huge circular fountain, which racers must navigate without losing Kudos on the tight roadside barriers. Circuits include:
- Speed Freak
- Island Hop
- Gamla Stan Loop
- Northern
- Bridges
- Gamla Island Hopping
- Round the Riksdagshuset
- Northern 2
- Gamla Oval
- Northern 3
Washington DC, USA
(7 routes)
Washington DC is a city full of major landmarks, such as the Capitol building, the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Senate office buildings. All of the above are featured in PGR2; in fact you can even see the Washington Monument in the distance. This city provided a welcome change from the usual 90-degree corners which most US cities provide, and actually allowed for some interesting and challenging routes to be created. Circuits include:
- Capitol Thrill
- Up and Over
- Capitol Thrill 2
- Square Dancin'
- Ring Race
- The Tour
- Northside Slide
Sydney, Australia
(12 routes)
Sydney is a city with a large contrast between new and old architecture. There are older, more traditional buildings in the Rocks district, just a few miles away from the more modern city area at the opposite end of George Street. Famous landmarks, such as the Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge, only add to the fantastic "new vs. old" atmosphere of the city. Circuits include:
- Argyle Street
- Opera House View
- Harbour Bridge
- Dawes Point Loop
- The Wharf
- Cumberland Street
- Hickson Run
- Sydney Harbour
- The Rocks Route
- George St. Challenge
- Under the Bridge
- Downtown Short
Hong Kong, China
(8 routes)
Hong Kong was always a great choice for PGR2, with it's combination of the ancient and ultra-modern in such a small area. The road layout is varied, with curved roads, tight corners, sweeping overpasses, and spectacular views of the harbour. We chose to base our course around the new Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, which was built on reclaimed land in 1997 to celebrate the handover of the city from the British back to the Chinese. This is just one example of the incredible architecture which can be found everywhere in Hong Kong. Circuits include:
- Admiralty
- The Waterfront
- Wan Chai Run
- Cotton Tree Drive
- Harbour Run
- The Convention Centres
- Hennessey Road
- Harcourt Challenge
Edinburgh, Scotland
(10 routes)
There aren't too many cities in the world which feature old, windy streets leading up the hill to a massive stone castle! Edinburgh is one such city, and was an essential area to include in PGR2. The twisting, narrow roads provide a unique challenge distinguishing Edinburgh from all other cities in the game. Circuits include:
- Princes Street East
- Grassmarket East
- Grassmarket West
- Lothian Road Eight
- Lothian Road Eight Long
- Princes Street Loop
- Grassmarket Eight
- Princes Street Long
- Castle Eight
- Terrace Sprint
Florence, Italy
(11 routes)
Florence is a unique city, with fantastic old architecture and narrow twisting streets. The cobblestone roads and numerous bridges add up to an intense and claustrophobic driving experience. Some open square areas contrast nicely to the main streets, and the rather large cathedral provides some extra eyecandy for any virtual tourists playing the game! Circuits include:
- Piazza della Signoria 1
- Ponte Vecchio
- Piazza della Signoria 2
- Duomo 1
- Piazza della Repubblica
- Arno
- Arno 2
- Ulfizi
- Battistero 1
- Battistero 2
- Duomo 2
Barcelona, Spain
(6 routes)
The city of Barcelona is over 2,000 years old, and it is extremely popular as a tourist destination for those in Europe. PGR2 faithfully recreates the Roman city walls and gothic architecture located in the old quarter, as well as smaller details such as the statue of Christopher Columbus. The famous tree-lined street of La Rambla is an excellent place to build up speed, but the less-than-perfect road surface might give your handling skills a workout! Circuits include:
- Place de Jaume
- Passeig de Colom
- Barri Gotic
- Catedral
- Las Rambias
- Catalan Challenge
Moscow, Russia
(7 routes)
Moscow is one of the most played cities on Xbox Live, and with good reason. The wide roads around the Kremlin and St Basil's Cathedral allow racers to really build up a sizeable number of Kudos points in relative safety from stash-destroying safety barriers. However, many Moscow circuits also race through the narrow side streets, providing an entirely different kind of challenge. Circuits include:
- KGB Corner
- St Basil's Circle
- Kremlin 1
- Lenin
- Kremlin 2
- Red Square 1
- Red Square 2
Chicago, USA
(10 routes)
Chicago, or "Home of the Skyscraper", was chosen above other US cities for it's distinctive features. Whilst virtually every major city is based on a grid-system (with Chicago being no exception), it's not usual to find a large river flowing right through the heart of the downtown area. Chicago offers this, allowing racers to zoom across several bridges as well as weaving in and out of skyscrapers. Chicago also boasts a large elevated train network, which forms an familiar sight in many of the circuits in PGR2. Circuits include:
- Chicago River Tour
- The Miracle Mile
- North Wabash Overpass
- River Crossing
- In The Loop
- Lower Wacker Run
- East Kinzie Crossover
- Wells & Lake
- East On Wacker
- West On Wacker
Nurburgring, Germany
(12 routes)
The original Nurburgring (Nordshleife) marked a slight change of direction for the Project Gotham Racing series. Whilst we had previously been concerned with just city-based tracks, the team at Bizarre felt it was time to branch out and include something which no other game had touched on before. The 'ring was the answer: 13 miles and 73 corners of pure racing adreneline, twisting and turning through the green countryside of Germany.
Paris, France
(7 routes)
Paris was included as part of the first DLC package for PGR2. Paris is Europe's capital of style, offset with some spectacular monuments like the Eiffel Tower and L'Arc de Tromphe. Race circuits like Le Circuit Complet, or Les Monuments Celebres, in new cars such as the fantastic Ferrari 288 GTO or BMW 645Ci. Also included is the British Racing Green version of the TVR Cerbera Speed 12; the ultimate car in the game. Previously only available to those who have completed the game at Platinum difficulty setting, the Speed 12 can now be yours to drive without having to complete the game to 100%. Circuits include:
- Le Circuit Complet
- Les Deux Ponts
- Elysees Challenge
- Les Monuments Celebres
- L'Arc de Triomphe
- Avenue D'Ilena
- Circuit Interieu
Long Beach, USA
(8 routes)
The Long Beach Booster pack, with 8 new sun-drenched routes and 8 new super cars, is a download which no PGR2 fan should be without. The city itself is set right on the beach, and curves elegantly into the city itself. Go from racing between palm trees to navigating the Capital Records building within a single lap, but watch out for the numerous hairpins and tight turns which will undoubtedly challenge your handling skills. Circuits include:
- Ocean Boulevard
- CC Circular
- Aquarium
- Long Beach City
- Dolphin Loop
- Coastal Run
- Rainbow Lagoon
- Long Beach Challenge
Test Track, UK
(1 route)
The car showroom opens out onto this fictional test track, perfect for taking your newly earnt supercars out for a spin. The track is themed like the Welsh countryside, although the circuit itself is completely made up. Keep an eye open for a couple of Easter Eggs which Bizarre designers have dropped in; including a shark's fin in the lake, turning "wind turbine thingies" in the distance, and some tiny flying sheep on the rolling hills. Interestingly, the pylons on the Test Track exist solely to enhance the sense of speed (with the shadows cast on the track); before they existed the track felt sluggish as the tarmac is so wide!
